Product Specification

Sodium Hypochlorite 10–15%

Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a clear, slightly yellowish solution with a distinct chlorine odour. Produced by reacting chlorine with sodium hydroxide solution — also known as liquid chlorine bleach or soda bleach. It is an excellent steriliser, oxidiser, and decolouring agent, and acts as a germicide, fungicide, and deodorant. SNJ Exim supplies high-strength industrial-grade NaOCl with 10–15% available chlorine, suitable for water treatment, textile bleaching, food plant sterilisation, and effluent treatment applications.

Grade Note: Available Chlorine % must be confirmed at time of order. NaOCl degrades during long transit — we optimise concentration to account for transit time to your destination port.

Applications

Key Industry Uses

💧

Water Treatment & Disinfection
Municipal drinking water disinfection, swimming pool sanitation, wastewater treatment plant dosing, and cooling water treatment. The most widely used liquid disinfectant in water infrastructure globally. Highly effective disinfectant for ebola virus on surfaces and contaminated materials.

🧵

Textile Bleaching
Cotton and synthetic fibre bleaching as an alternative to hydrogen peroxide in certain process conditions. Used for fabric whitening, pre-treatment before dyeing, and elimination of natural colour from raw fibres.

🍎

Food Plant & Dairy Sanitation
CIP (Clean-in-Place) sanitation systems in food and beverage plants, dairy equipment sterilisation, food contact surface disinfection, fruit and vegetable washing, and bottling plant sanitation.

📄

Paper & Pulp Bleaching
Pulp bleaching in paper manufacturing as part of multi-stage bleaching sequences. Provides effective delignification and brightness enhancement in kraft and sulphite pulp processes.

🏭

Industrial Effluent Treatment
Destruction of cyanide in gold mining effluent (cyanide detoxification), oxidation of sulphides and phenols, colour removal from textile effluent, and odour control in industrial wastewater systems.

🏥

Institutional & Healthcare Sanitation
Hospital surface disinfection, laboratory sterilisation, pharmaceutical plant sanitation, and large-scale institutional cleaning operations where broad-spectrum microbial control is required.

Packaging

UN-Approved Options

Important — Stability Notice: Sodium Hypochlorite degrades over time, especially with heat and light exposure. Available chlorine content reduces during long sea transit. SNJ Exim supplies NaOCl at a concentration calibrated to your transit time so that the product arrives within specification at the destination port.
HDPE Jerrycan
25L / 35L
UN-approved vented HDPE jerrycans. Venting essential due to chlorine gas generation. Pallet of 40–60 units.
IBC Tank
1000L · Vented HDPE
UN-approved vented IBC. Must be fitted with pressure relief valve. Ideal for industrial buyers with bulk unloading capability. 18–20 IBCs per FCL.
HDPE Drum
200L · Vented
UN-approved vented HDPE drums. Suitable for medium-volume buyers. Palletised. Vented bung essential for gas release.
Safety & Handling

⚠️

Corrosive — IMDG Class 8
Causes skin burns and serious eye damage on contact. Strong alkaline solution (pH 11–13). Full face shield, chemical gloves, and protective clothing required.

☠️

Incompatible with Acids
Never mix with acids — rapid chlorine gas liberation is highly toxic. Incompatible with amines, alcohols, glycols, and strong oxidising agents. Store separately from all acids including HCl.

🌡️

Temperature Sensitive
Avoid heat and direct sunlight. Store below 25°C. Decomposes with heat, releasing chlorine gas and oxygen. All containers must be vented — never use sealed non-vented containers.

🚢

IMDG Class 8 · UN 1791
Full DG declaration, GHS-compliant SDS, UN packing certificate, and third-party COA included with every shipment. Segregated from acids in container.

♻️

Environmental Precautions
Do not discharge to waterways untreated. Toxic to aquatic life. Neutralise with sodium thiosulphate solution before disposal. GHS Aquatic Hazard Category applies.

Africa & Global Market Context: Sodium Hypochlorite is among the highest-demand chemicals for African water treatment infrastructure. Municipal water authorities in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, and Egypt use NaOCl extensively for drinking water disinfection as chlorine delivery infrastructure remains limited. The product is also widely used by textile bleaching units in Ethiopia and Egypt, and by food and beverage manufacturers across sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. SNJ Exim supplies NaOCl in concentrations optimised for your transit route — ensuring your specification is met at the destination port.

Technical Notes

Storage, Stability & Handling

Storage Requirements
  • Store in cool, dark conditions below 25°C
  • Use only vented HDPE containers — no metal, no glass
  • Keep away from all acids, especially HCl and H₂SO₄
  • Segregate from flammables and organic materials
  • Shelf life: 60–90 days from date of manufacture at recommended storage conditions
  • Test available chlorine on receipt and before use
Transit & Export Considerations
  • Supplied at higher initial concentration to allow for degradation during transit
  • Buyers should specify destination and transit time so concentration can be optimised
  • Cannot be shipped in reefer (refrigerated) containers — ambient FCL only
  • Must be segregated from acids in the container — cannot co-load with HCl
  • IMDG DG declaration prepared per UN 1791 requirements — full DG set included
  • Third-party COA from accredited lab issued before container sealing
