Product Specification

Sodium Hydroxide — Flakes

Caustic Soda Flakes are the solid, white, translucent flake form of sodium hydroxide — a strong industrial base. Produced by the membrane electrolysis route and dried into flakes, the product dissolves readily in water with an exothermic reaction. It is one of the most widely used alkalis in soap and detergent manufacture, textile mercerising, pulp and paper, alumina refining and chemical processing.

Flakes or Lye? Flakes suit buyers who need a solid, easy-to-store form and lower freight per tonne of NaOH. For bulk liquid handling, see our Caustic Soda Lye page.

Applications

Key Industry Uses

The workhorse alkali across manufacturing and processing.

Soap & Detergent
Saponification of oils and fats into soap; alkalinity builder in detergent manufacture.
Textiles
Cotton mercerising, scouring and dye-bath preparation to improve strength, lustre and dye uptake.
Pulp & Paper
Pulping and bleaching chemical in kraft and recycled-fibre paper production.
Alumina & Metals
Bauxite digestion in alumina refining and surface treatment in metal processing.
Water Treatment
pH correction, acid neutralisation and heavy-metal precipitation in water and effluent plants.
Chemical Processing
Feedstock for sodium salts, drilling-fluid additive, and a general-purpose strong base across industry.

Safety & Handling

Safety & Handling

Caustic Soda is a Class 8 corrosive solid — handle with full PPE and correct DG documentation.

🧪

Strongly Corrosive
Causes severe burns to skin and eyes. Full face shield, chemical gloves and apron required.

🌡️

Exothermic in Water
Releases heat on dissolving. Always add flakes to water slowly — never water to flakes.

🌧️

Hygroscopic — Keep Dry
Absorbs moisture and CO₂. Keep containers sealed and stored in a dry area.

UN 1823 · Class 8 · PG II
Shipped with IMDG DG declaration, GHS SDS and UN-marked packing. Segregate from acids and aluminium.
Africa & Asia Market Context: Soap makers and textile mills across West and East Africa, plus the RMG and textile sector in Bangladesh, are steady buyers of caustic flakes. Solid flakes ship at lower freight per tonne of NaOH than liquid lye — an advantage for inland buyers.

Buyer FAQ

Common Questions

Should I buy flakes or lye?
Flakes (solid, 98–99% NaOH) ship at lower freight per tonne of active NaOH and store easily — ideal for inland buyers and smaller batches. Lye (48% liquid) suits high-volume consumers with bulk liquid handling. We supply both.
What dangerous-goods documents are included?
Caustic soda flakes are UN 1823, IMDG Class 8, Packing Group II. Every shipment includes the IMDG DG declaration, GHS SDS, UN-marked packing certificate and third-party COA.
How is it packed to prevent moisture damage?
25 kg woven PP bags with an inner HM-HDPE liner that seals out moisture and CO₂, palletised and shrink-wrapped. HDPE drums are available for longer open-storage life.
What purity do you supply?
Standard 98–99% NaOH with Na₂CO₃ ≤0.40% and low iron. Each lot is shipped with a third-party Certificate of Analysis.
What ports do you ship caustic soda from?
We load primarily from Mundra and Kandla in Gujarat, the nearest deep-sea container ports to our Ankleshwar base. Other Indian ports can be arranged on request to suit your shipping line.
Do you provide an IMDG dangerous-goods certificate for caustic soda?
Yes. Caustic soda flakes are UN 1823, IMDG Class 8, Packing Group II. Every shipment includes the IMDG DG declaration, UN-marked packing certificate, GHS SDS and third-party COA.

Export Markets & Commercial Terms

Where We Supply

SNJ Exim ships UN-marked Caustic Soda Flakes (NaOH 98–99%) in full-container loads from Ankleshwar, Gujarat to soap, textile and paper producers across three regions.

We regularly export Caustic Soda Flakes to soap, textile, paper and alumina producers in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia (East & West Africa); the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman (GCC); and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam (South & Southeast Asia), alongside Egypt and South Africa. As UN 1823 / IMDG Class 8 cargo, every container leaves Gujarat with full dangerous-goods paperwork — Bill of Lading, third-party Certificate of Analysis, Certificate of Origin, GHS Safety Data Sheet, UN-marked packing certificate and the IMDG DG declaration — so your port clearance is covered on arrival.
