Product Specification

Aluminium Sulphate — Non-Ferric 17%

Non-ferric (iron-free) Aluminium Sulphate is a low-iron grade of alum with Al₂O₃ at 17% minimum. The deliberately low iron content prevents colour staining, which is why it is specified for potable-water treatment, fine paper sizing and bright textile shades. In water, it hydrolyses to form aluminium hydroxide flocs that capture suspended solids, turbidity and colour — clarifying both drinking water and industrial effluent.

Why non-ferric? The low iron level avoids the yellow/brown staining that standard ferric alum can cause — essential for drinking water and white/fine paper.

Applications

Key Industry Uses

Where iron-free aluminium sulphate is the specified coagulant and sizing agent.

Drinking-Water Treatment
Primary coagulant in municipal potable-water plants — removes turbidity, suspended solids and colour. Low iron keeps treated water clear.
Wastewater & Effluent
Flocculation and clarification of industrial and municipal effluent; phosphate removal and sludge conditioning.
Paper Sizing
Sets rosin size on paper at the wet end, improving water resistance, sheet formation and print quality in fine paper.
Textile Dye Fixing
Mordant and colour-fixing agent, including naphthol-based dyeing of cotton — clean shades without iron staining.
Leather Tanning
Alum tanning and pickling of hides; also used as an astringent in leather finishing.
Other Industrial
Foaming agent in firefighting foams, concrete set accelerator and a catalyst/intermediate for other aluminium salts.

Safety & Handling

Storage & Handling

Aluminium sulphate is not classified as dangerous for transport — but its solution is acidic.

🌧️

Keep Dry
Hygroscopic — cakes on prolonged moisture exposure. Store sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated area.

🧤

Acidic in Solution
Solution is mildly acidic and irritating. Use gloves and eye protection; avoid dust inhalation.

🚫

Keep from Alkalis
Reacts with strong alkalis. Keep away from caustic and from oxidising materials.

📄

GHS SDS Supplied
GHS-compliant SDS provided with every quotation — no separate request needed.
Africa Market Context: Municipal water-treatment authorities across East and West Africa — and the GCC — are core buyers of non-ferric alum for potable-water clarification. SNJ Exim added it in direct response to water authorities and chemical distributors seeking to consolidate coagulant sourcing with one reliable Indian exporter. See our Kenya, Nigeria and UAE & GCC market pages.

Buyer FAQ

Common Questions

What does “non-ferric” mean for alum?
It means the iron content is kept very low (≤0.005% as Fe). Iron causes yellow/brown staining, so non-ferric grade is required for drinking water, fine paper and bright textiles, where standard ferric alum would discolour the product.
Is it suitable for drinking-water treatment?
Yes. The 17% Al₂O₃ non-ferric grade is the standard potable-water coagulant. We provide a third-party COA confirming alumina and iron limits for each lot.
Which physical form should I order?
Slab/lump and kibbled forms suit dissolving tanks; powder suits direct dosing. Tell us your dosing setup and we supply the matching form.
Is non-ferric alum dangerous goods for shipping?
No. Aluminium sulphate is not regulated under IMDG and ships as general cargo. A GHS SDS is supplied with every shipment.
Can you supply liquid aluminium sulphate solution?
Yes. Alongside solid non-ferric alum (slab, kibbled and powder), we can supply liquid aluminium sulphate solution — typically ~8% Al₂O₃ — for water-treatment plants that dose directly from bulk tanks. The exact concentration is confirmed on the lot COA.
What is the iron content in your non-ferric alum?
Iron is held to 0.005% (as Fe) maximum — the defining limit of non-ferric grade. Low iron prevents the yellow/brown staining that disqualifies ferric alum from drinking-water, fine-paper and bright-textile use.

Export Markets & Commercial Terms

Where We Supply

SNJ Exim ships iron-free Non-Ferric Alum (Aluminium Sulphate 17%) in full-container loads from Ankleshwar, Gujarat to water boards and mills across three regions.

We regularly export Non-Ferric Alum 17% to municipal water boards, paper mills and textile processors in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia (East & West Africa); the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman (GCC); and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam (South & Southeast Asia), alongside Egypt and South Africa. Every container leaves Gujarat with a complete export document set — Bill of Lading, third-party Certificate of Analysis (confirming Al₂O₃ and iron limits), Certificate of Origin and GHS Safety Data Sheet — so your potable-water compliance checks are covered on arrival.
