Product Specification

Sodium Hydroxide — Lye (Solution)

Caustic Soda Lye is the aqueous solution form of sodium hydroxide, supplied at a standard 48% concentration. It is a clear, colourless, strongly alkaline liquid produced by the membrane electrolysis route. For high-volume consumers, lye removes the need to dissolve solid flakes on site — it can be dosed directly. It serves the same end uses as flakes: textiles, soap, alumina, pulp and paper, and water treatment.

Lye or Flakes? Lye suits high-volume plants with bulk liquid dosing and tank storage. For lower freight per tonne of NaOH and easy storage, see our Caustic Soda Flakes page.

Applications

Key Industry Uses

Bulk liquid alkali for high-throughput operations.

Textiles
Mercerising and scouring of cotton, dye-bath preparation — direct liquid dosing in continuous lines.
Soap & Oleochemicals
Saponification and neutralisation in soap and fatty-acid plants.
Pulp & Paper
Kraft pulping liquor and bleaching-stage alkali in paper mills.
Alumina & Metals
Bauxite digestion in alumina refining; etching and surface treatment of metals.
Water & Effluent
pH correction and acid neutralisation in municipal and industrial treatment plants.
Chemical Processing
Reactant and neutraliser across organic and inorganic synthesis and petroleum refining.

Safety & Handling

Safety & Handling

Caustic Soda Lye is a Class 8 corrosive liquid — handle with full PPE and correct DG documentation.

🧪

Strongly Corrosive
Causes severe burns. Full face shield, chemical gloves, apron and splash protection required.

🌡️

Heat on Dilution
Dilution is exothermic. Add lye to water slowly with cooling; never add water to concentrated lye.

🚫

Segregate & Vent
Keep away from acids and aluminium (hydrogen gas risk). Store in vented, compatible tanks/containers.

🚢

UN 1824 · Class 8 · PG II
Shipped with IMDG DG declaration, GHS SDS and UN-marked packing on every consignment.
Africa & GCC Market Context: Large textile, soap and water-treatment plants prefer bulk lye where on-site liquid storage exists. SNJ Exim added caustic soda in direct response to buyers in East/West Africa and the GCC consolidating their alkali sourcing with one Indian exporter.

Buyer FAQ

Common Questions

What concentration is your caustic soda lye?
Standard is 48% NaOH (range 47–50%). 32% and rayon/technical grades can be supplied on request. The exact concentration is confirmed on each lot’s Certificate of Analysis.
Lye or flakes — which is more economical?
Lye is convenient for high-volume plants with liquid storage and direct dosing. Flakes carry less water, so freight per tonne of active NaOH is lower — better for inland buyers. We supply both and can advise on landed cost.
How is bulk liquid shipped?
In UN-approved HDPE drums (250/300 kg), 1000 L IBCs, or ISO tank containers / flexitanks for the lowest per-tonne handling cost on large offtakes.
What DG documentation is provided?
Caustic soda lye is UN 1824, IMDG Class 8, Packing Group II. Each shipment includes the IMDG DG declaration, GHS SDS, UN-marked packing certificate and third-party COA.
What ports do you ship caustic soda lye from?
Drums and IBCs load from Mundra and Kandla; ISO-tank and flexitank shipments typically route via Mundra or Hazira in Gujarat. We confirm the loading port with your booking.
Do you provide an IMDG dangerous-goods certificate for caustic soda lye?
Yes. Caustic soda lye is UN 1824, IMDG Class 8, Packing Group II. Every shipment includes the IMDG DG declaration, UN-marked packing certificate, GHS SDS and third-party COA.

Where We Supply

SNJ Exim ships bulk Caustic Soda Lye (NaOH 48%) in drums, IBCs and ISO tanks from Ankleshwar, Gujarat to textile, soap and alumina plants across three regions.

We regularly export Caustic Soda Lye to textile, soap, alumina, paper and water-treatment plants in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia (East & West Africa); the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman (GCC); and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam (South & Southeast Asia), alongside Egypt and South Africa. As UN 1824 / IMDG Class 8 liquid cargo, every shipment leaves Gujarat with full dangerous-goods paperwork — Bill of Lading, third-party Certificate of Analysis, Certificate of Origin, GHS Safety Data Sheet, UN-marked packing certificate and the IMDG DG declaration — so your port clearance is covered on arrival.
