Hydrochloric acid is one of the most versatile industrial chemicals in Sub-Saharan Africa’s manufacturing economy — and demand is accelerating across multiple sectors simultaneously.

Mining Sector Demand

Gold, copper, and platinum group metal extraction operations across the SADC region rely heavily on HCl for acid leaching and pH control. With major new mine openings in Zambia, DRC, and Tanzania, demand for technical-grade HCl is projected to grow significantly through 2026.

The shift toward smaller-scale artisanal and semi-industrial mining operations has also created demand for smaller packaging formats — jerrycans and square mousers rather than bulk tankers — which aligns well with Indian export capabilities.

Textile and Apparel Growth

Ethiopia, Kenya, and Egypt are expanding their garment manufacturing sectors, creating sustained demand for HCl in textile pre-treatment and dyeing processes. Indian suppliers are increasingly competitive for this application segment due to freight cost advantages from Mundra and Nhava Sheva.

Ethiopia’s industrial parks in particular have attracted significant foreign investment in textile manufacturing, creating a new demand centre that did not exist five years ago.

Water Treatment Infrastructure

African Development Bank and World Bank-funded water projects are scaling across East and West Africa. HCl is used in pH adjustment for both potable and wastewater treatment systems. Municipal contracts tend to require consistent, documented supply with full GHS SDS — exactly the documentation profile Indian exporters like SNJ Exim provide as standard.

What This Means for Procurement Teams

Buyers sourcing HCl for African operations should prioritise suppliers who can provide: UN 1789 packaging certification, GHS-compliant SDS, third-party COA from an accredited laboratory, and IMDG-compliant DG documentation. Spot-sourcing from undocumented suppliers creates port clearance risk and increases total landed cost.
